From a Grass Shack to Silicon Valley
Wednesday Mar 10, 2021
Wednesday Mar 10, 2021
Martha Nino was born in Mexico and immigrated to the USA undocumented as a child. She grew up in the Bay Area and watched Silicon Valley grow into what it is today. She's a 25-year tech pro and just recently celebrated her 15-year anniversary as a Sr. Marketing Manager at Adobe. In this episode, Martha tells her story in the most real and authentic way possible—from a grass shack in Zacatecas to poverty in the U.S. to a non-linear road into Silicon Valley. For a long time, Martha's voice and story were silent. Finding power, passion and purpose in her voice has given her a reason to keep speaking and writing in the most human way possible. Find and connect with Martha on LinkedIn. Big love to my partner/sponsor, RisOn. RisOn is an interactive weekly space created by two first-gen Latinos with the intention to mindfully unburden, introspect, connect, and belong. As a Hella Latin@ listener, you get a free one-month membership. Stick around at the end of the episode for more details. Latinos in Hollywood
Thursday Feb 25, 2021
Thursday Feb 25, 2021
How many times have you scrolled through Netflix and saw stereotypical Latino movies and leads? Narcos, Latin lovers, funny sidekick and don't get me started on stereotypical Latina narratives. Folks like Edwin Porres Jr. are out here changing the game. Edwin was born in Guatemala and raised in West Virginia. As a Latino raised in the United States, he didn't recognize himself in the stereotypical Latino roles depicted by Hollywood. So he wrote Hóllyweird with the intention to reflect his own experiences in Hollywood. He then finished the script with his wife, Jamie, whom you’ll meet during our Cafecito & Chisme portion. Find more info about Hollyweird at hollyweirdthemovie.com and look them up on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and check out their Youtube and IMDB page. Big love to my partner/sponsor, RisOn. RisOn is an interactive weekly space created by two first-gen Latinos with the intention to mindfully unburden, introspect, connect, and belong. Karen Vasquez O'Donnell was born and raised in El Salvador, and moved to the United States at 13 years old with her family. In this episode, she talks about her childhood living in a rural pueblito in El Salvador to her first U.S. embassy visit to navigating and overcoming new challenges in Pennsylvania. Karen's upbringing is one many immigrants in our community experience. She grew up in El Salvador away from her parents while they worked in the United States—an experience that made her the tough jefa she is today.
